A developmental vision exam differs from a routine eye exam. It includes determining the eye health and any need for eyeglasses or contacts. The exam continues with more in-depth testing to assess eye tracking, eye alignment, focusing, visual perception, and other subtle problems that can interfere with reading and learning. The developmental vision exam can help determine if vision therapy can help with any learning-related vision problems, vision problems due to traumatic brain injury, and more.

A developmental exam is highly recommended for children having difficulties with reading, writing, and keeping up in the classroom. We recommend that all children have a yearly eye exam, even if no learning-related problems are of concern. For more information regarding the the specific areas of visual function tested during the developmental eye exam, see "What is vision therapy" under our Vision Therapy tab above.
